A G-Class pays £903.30 to park in Islington. Here's what six cars pay at 63 UK councils

£903.30 a year is what Islington charges a new Mercedes G-Class diesel for a residents' permit, including a £259.50 diesel surcharge.
- £735: how much more a G-Class pays than a Tesla Model Y in Lambeth (£870.85 against £135.96).
- £0: Leeds and Nottingham charge nothing for any of the six cars.
- 30 of 63 councils charge all six cars exactly the same.
What we found
- The dearest councils for the G-Class are Islington (£903.30), Lambeth (£870.85), Edinburgh (£177.40 to £825.30) and Tower Hamlets (£780).
- The cheapest for a Model Y are Newcastle upon Tyne (£0), Coventry (£10), St Albans (£16.30) and Barnet (£19.52).
- It's not only big cars. A Ford Puma, a typical family petrol, pays up to £345 in Birmingham.
- In 30 councils the car makes no difference. Every one of the six pays the same.
- Hackney: a new G 450 d pays £531 with the council's exemption for diesels that meet the "real driving emissions 2" (RDE2) standard, or £881 if the exemption isn't applied. The G 450 d is a Euro 6e car, and Euro 6e has a tighter real-driving NOx margin than RDE2 (ICCT summary), so it qualifies.

How we did this
- First residents' permit, 12 months, at 63 councils whose prices we have checked against their own published charges.
- Each council's own rules are applied: CO2 bands, engine size, diesel surcharges and their cutoffs, and battery size where a council uses it.
- Every price comes from the same calculator that runs this site. Nothing is worked out by hand. Where a council prices by zone, we show the range across its standard residents' zones.
- Car specs come from the maker or the government's Vehicle Certification Agency, linked above.
What we left out
- Second and third permits (see the second-car tax), visitor permits and discounts.
- Vehicle length and weight rules that our calculator doesn't price yet.
- 20 car and council pairs we couldn't price. Each one is marked in the table with the reason.
