How We Verify UK Parking Permit Prices

We track resident parking permit tariffs for 230 UK local authorities. 43 currently meet our publish bar. This page explains what that bar is, so you can judge our numbers instead of trusting them blindly.

1. Official sources only

Every price we publish traces back to a council's own website — a tariff page, a fees-and-charges PDF, or a linked notice (e.g. a London Gazette parking order). We do not accept third-party aggregators, forum posts, or cached copies as a source. Each published council page links the exact official URL we used.

2. The comparable we rank on: first permit, 12 months

Councils publish permits in different shapes — some by CO₂ band, some flat, some by zone, some with second/third-permit surcharges layered on top. To compare like with like, our rankings and headline "Offer" price always cite the first resident permit, 12-month duration, at the tariff's lowest qualifying band unless a page states otherwise. We do not stuff a household's combined second-and-third-permit total into that headline figure — that would overstate what a single-car household actually pays. Where a council's cheapest route is genuinely a different duration or band (e.g. an EV-specific table), the ranking page says so explicitly next to the number.

3. Printed effective dates, not guesses

We only cite a price against an effective date that is printed on the source (or on a dated instrument a printed source clearly matches, e.g. a paired Gazette notice). A copyright footer year, an "unused" CMS-modified timestamp, or a fiscal-year label like "2025/26" is not an effective date. If a council's page has real prices but no printed date, we hold that council back rather than invent one — see "Published vs HOLD" below.

4. Cell evidence: every price is traceable to a quote

New price cells we add carry machine-checked evidence: a same-host quote containing the printed value and an ISO retrieval timestamp. This is what lets us catch drift automatically — if a council changes a page and our stored quote no longer matches, that cell is flagged stale for re-verification rather than silently trusted.

5. Published vs. identity HOLD

Not every council we've looked at is live on the site. A council is only published when it has a verified tariff, a printed effective date, and an official source URL together — we call this the publish triple. Councils with real data but a missing piece (usually a dateless page) sit in HOLD: we have the numbers, but not enough to stand behind them publicly yet. As of this page's last build, 187 councils are in this state. HOLD is not a bug queue — it is a deliberate refusal to publish incomplete provenance.

6. What we deliberately leave out

Some councils print pricing axes we don't yet model on the calculator — for example a duration we don't support, a vehicle-length surcharge, or an over-the-counter/postal price that differs from the online one. Rather than silently drop these or approximate them, we mark them as omitted on that council's page. An omission is a scope boundary, not an error — it means "this axis exists on the source and we haven't modelled it," not "this council is cheaper than it looks.

7. Limitations

  • We are not a legal or financial adviser. Always confirm your final price on the council's own site before applying or budgeting.
  • Councils change tariffs, sometimes mid-year and without much notice. We re-check on a schedule, not continuously — there will always be a gap between a council's change and ours.
  • Our rankings only include councils that clear the publish bar above. A council's absence from a ranking does not mean it is cheap or expensive — it means we don't yet have verified, dated, sourced data for it.
  • Emissions-band and diesel pricing depends on your specific vehicle's registration details; our estimates use the figures you enter, and are only as accurate as those figures.

Publisher transparency

Who runs this site, how we fund it, and how we handle corrections are summarised on About Parking Permit Costs. We earn commission through Awin on labelled YourParkingSpace affiliate offers on council pages (marked Ad next to the heading; outbound links are rel="sponsored noopener"). Affiliate relationships do not change verified permit prices. Google AdSense display ads are not live. Full disclosure, including cookies and the consent banner, is on advertising and affiliates.
