Diesel Parking Permit Surcharges: Which UK Councils Charge More
Diesel vehicles are treated three different ways in UK council parking permit tariffs. This guide lists the 14 councils in our verified dataset that print a diesel-specific rule, and how each one applies it.
The three diesel pricing shapes
Councils that charge diesel differently from petrol do it in one of three ways on their published tariff:
- Surcharge on top of the CO₂ band — diesel pays the same banded price as petrol, plus a fixed extra amount (or, on some pages, a printed percentage of the resolved band rather than a flat figure).
- On the same table, a separate diesel row or column — the tariff table itself lists a diesel price next to the petrol price for the same band, so there's no separate "surcharge" to add — the diesel figure is the printed cell.
- A fully separate diesel table — some councils publish an entire second price grid for diesel vehicles, distinct from the petrol/CO₂ table, covering the same bands and durations.
We only ever cite what's printed. Where a council's diesel rule is a percentage of the band rather than a flat amount, we show the percentage as printed rather than computing a pretend flat total — the actual amount depends on which band your vehicle falls into.

What's not on this table
Diesel rules that exist on a council's page but aren't yet verified, undated, or attached to an unpublished (HOLD) council are not listed here — not because the council doesn't charge diesel differently, but because we don't yet have enough to stand behind the figure publicly. Some councils also apply diesel treatment only above a registration-date or emissions-standard cutoff (e.g. pre-Euro 6 / pre-RDE2 vehicles) rather than to all diesels; where that's the case it's noted against that row rather than folded into a single number.
Limitations
- This guide covers first-permit, 12-month diesel pricing only, for consistency with our other rankings — it does not cover second-permit diesel surcharges.
- A percentage-based diesel surcharge is shown as printed (e.g. "+50% of band"), not converted to a £ figure, because the true cost depends on your vehicle's CO₂ band.
- Councils not listed here may still charge diesel differently — they simply don't yet meet our publish bar for a verified, dated diesel rule.
